How to Read a Car Battery Label

A battery label can show group, voltage, chemistry, CCA, reserve capacity and part number. Each field answers a different replacement question.

Record the exact part

Write down the manufacturer part number and any OEM label, not just the large group number. Auxiliary and primary battery labels may differ.

Separate performance metrics

CCA, CA, Ah and RC have different test meanings. Do not copy a replacement product’s rating into an unknown OEM minimum.

Put the answer to work

Start with the actual vehicle label or installed component. Then use our vehicle directory and comparison tools to narrow the research. Any missing condition should be checked with the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
