Tire Types: Season, Class and Load Markings

Tire categories describe different attributes. A tire can be all-season and XL, for example. Use the exact SKU and vehicle requirement for a replacement decision.

All-Season

Manufacturer seasonal category; may coexist with other capability markings.

Fitment check: Do not infer winter certification or ice capability from the label.

All-Weather

Manufacturer category used on selected BFGoodrich and Nokian lines.

Fitment check: Retain actual 3PMSF data separately; do not overwrite a manufacturer All-Season label.

Winter

Seasonal winter category including selected X-Ice and Ultra Grip variants.

Fitment check: Check exact service description and any OEM speed-rating exception.

Summer

Manufacturer category for selected Pilot Sport / Latitude Sport products.

Fitment check: Not automatically suitable for winter use; consult the product operating-temperature instructions.

All-Terrain

Use classification for selected BFGoodrich All-Terrain products.

Fitment check: May use LT load ranges; do not substitute for passenger-metric purely by size.

Highway / touring

Editorial navigation tag for road-oriented products; not a dimensional standard.

Fitment check: Keep manufacturer line and service description as primary specification.

Ultra-high performance

Performance positioning for ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus.

Fitment check: Performance branding does not authorize a lower load/speed rating.

EV-oriented

Manufacturer EV-oriented product positioning such as iON.

Fitment check: Not a universal EV fitment certificate; axle, load, OE marking and wheels still matter.

P-metric

Keep explicit P prefix as part of the specification.

Fitment check: Do not discard the prefix when determining replacement eligibility.

LT-metric

LT prefix with load range and possibly single/dual service indices.

Fitment check: Load range and inflation/load tables require separate verification.

Metric, prefix unspecified

A source that prints 265/70R17 may not establish P/Euro-metric/LT class.

Fitment check: Unknown class is not proof of passenger-tire suitability.

Flotation

A format such as 37x12.50R17, preserved separately from width/aspect metric notation.

Fitment check: Nominal diameter is not measured operating diameter or fitment approval.

Extra Load / Reinforced

A size-specific load designation, separate from tire width and rim diameter.

Fitment check: Higher load index alone does not establish that all other OEM requirements are met.

Standard Load

Explicit SL where the manufacturer table states it.

Fitment check: A missing XL flag is null, not automatically SL.

LT Load Range

C/D/E etc. are retained independently of the load index.

Fitment check: Do not calculate load capacity from ply-rating terminology alone.

Run-flat

A separately specified construction feature; unknown is not false.

Fitment check: Replacement needs vehicle and product instructions; not inferred from premium branding.

Acoustic foam

A separately documented feature on selected Hankook variants.

Fitment check: Noise technology does not prove size/vehicle compatibility.

Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake

Record the manufacturer-stated severe-snow marking by exact variant.

Fitment check: It is separate from M+S and does not establish every winter/ice performance measure.

Before ordering tires

Read the driver-door tire placard. Match the installed wheel, axle, tire class, load index, speed rating and any OE marking. The size alone cannot approve a replacement SKU. Tire-sidewall maximum pressure is not your vehicle’s cold inflation pressure.
